This is loosely based on a competition idea the Utena club was having a few months ago. It asked what the cast of Utena would be doing, 10 years down the line.

For those unfamiliar with the series, I won't go into detail, it's just impossible to summarise! So let's just say that it is uncertain whether Utena and Anthy will ever see each other again.

Flash forward. My idea was that, since she's always been so eager to fight for justice, Utena would, out in the real world, become a lawyer. However, cold hard life took its toll and she lost some of her innocence and belief in the goodness of people. It changed her.

Anthy, meanwhile, has finally come to terms with her past and what she has done. It is now time to fully give herself to the person who helped her to begin that journey. And so she tracks down her prince.

For Utena, it is the emotional equivalent of being thrown through the ice into a freezing cold lake, and then being hit head on by a truck doing 90km/h. Everything comes flooding back, and perhaps now that they have more control over their own lives, the bond they shared can truly grow into something mature and honest.

Can I just mention that I'm very proud of me. Thes perfectly reasonable manga-style figures were not referenced, and yet look reasonably like the characters +some years. And also, I did it all in the space of a day. (Sketched last night, coloured for much of the early hours of the morning).

And on those middle panels: I wanted to hark back to the shadow-art design of the anime's promotional art and obviously the shadow girls themselves. Hence those panels are flat colour, with a (hopefully!) art deco/ popart look to them.

Tra-la-la. Utena and Anthy and REVOLUTIONARY GIRL UTENA (c) Chiho Saito/ Be-Papas.

'Little one,' he said, 'who bears up alone in such deep sorrow - never loose that strength or nobility, even when you become a young woman.

I give you this ring to remember me by - we shall meet again.'

Wow, that's some amazing composition there! I love the detail on Utena's eye, and the transition between the purple silhouetting Anthy's hair in one panel and the frame of the doorway in the next. And the stylized rose + black in the last panel! It's all very well thought out and cohesive.

Thank you so much. I truly did put a fair amount of thought into the layout, so thanks for noticing. Utena means a lot to me, so I wanted to preserve something of the original flavour.

I'm almost done with page 2: Kozue.
